The Story of the Shepherd Boy

At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His life was pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had more info been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
